"Christmas Waltz" sung by Nellie McKay on Mad Men

On the Mad Men season 5 episode (May 20, 2012) called Christmas Waltz we are treated to a song made famous by Doris Day. During the credits, singer Nellie McKay's recording of "Christmas Waltz" plays soothingly as we are returned to reality. For those avid watchers of the show we are left wondering if Don Drapper has returned, and for those of us who are Mad Men and ukulele addicts this was a real bonus.

"I don’t know too much about Nellie McKay other than the fact that she’s amazing. I think I heard some buzzings about her in 2002 but it was mostly from women that touted her as some sort of girl power act and I wasn’t sure if I was invited to the party... I’ve made a promise to myself: Never, ever miss a Nellie McKay show. I recommend you follow suit"  By Jon, LA Snark

Can you tell what chords she's using? Is her uke tuned GCEA or an alternate tuning? I love this arrangement!

I'll check into this for you today. I love it too. I probably need to learn it while the season is young.

Happy Holidays,

I'll try these to see if they work:

Hi, My husband says she's playing it in B. Yikes! I wonder if she's tuned her uke up or down a step? Judy

Thank you for the link! That's easier to play than in B :) and the chords seem right. There are a TON of versions out there and some of them are not usable--either too simple to support the melody, or too complex for this uke player! (And nearly always in the wrong key for an alto!)

OK, I just answered my own question. She's tuned her uke down a half step so she's singing in B, but using the C chords. The azchords link chords work (but I'm leaving out the Dsus2--I don't hear that). Now I can play along with Nellie! Have you seen her youtube of "Meditation" by Jobim? Another great song.

That's great research on that song. I heard it at the end of Mad Men, and it took a long time to find out who was playing it. I was surprised that it didn't get more coverage from the uke world at the time.

Meditation is a great tune - Thanks!

Best regards,
Kyle

I made a few changes to the chord chart: Am7 after the Cmaj7 (after the lyric "with things"); D7 instead of Dm7 on the last verse ("and this song of mine") and G7 instead of D7sus2 at the end. I play through the progression at the end to finish it off. I'll probably post my arrangement on my uke club site.

I'm a retired elementary teacher and got bit by the Uke bug while researching for my new children's book "Ukulele Hayley" (Holdiay House, 2013) which will release next fall. It's about a girl who saves her school music program by starting a uke club.

Nice to meet you!
